Shirley Patricia Ellis
We'd like to warmly introduce you, our special friends, to the face behind the name "Shirley's". Ms. Shirley Patricia Ellis was the mother of Warren Ellis, husband of Calypso Hills Hideaways/Shirley's owner April Dawkins-Ellis.
Big Shirls as she was affectionately called by family and friends was the youngest of 13 children. A cooking enthusiast, she loved being in the kitchen from an early age. THEE Cook within her family, Shirley was always ready to cook up a hearty meal. Even after a long day at work and standing on her feet all day, she would rush home, into the kitchen to cook one of her sweet pots. Her favorite dish was corn beef and white rice with a side of corn. Shirley loved her family and always made sure everyone had a meal even if it was shared from that one can of corn beef.
Preparing Christmas dinner was Shirley's favorite as she would put together a feast with ALL of the trimmings and sides; making sure to soak that turkey a few days in advance.
In her earlier years, while serving as a cook at Chicken Unlimited in Nassau, Bahamas Shirley introduced peas n rice to the daily menu of the franchise group.
In addition to being enthusiastic about cooking, Shirley was very crafty and also had a passion for sewing.
Whenever Home Fabrics in Nassau held the 1 cent sale, Shirley would buy rolls and rolls of fabric and sew anything from underwear to curtains. Her gift also made room for her as she worked as a seamstress. Any fashion idea that crossed your mind, she made a reality.
Also a casual sewist, Big Shirls sewed everything she wore! She was also known to have lots of shoes in every style and color.
